Rock Art, MÍOBHAIGH

Rock Art in Ireland, dating from the Bronze Age

A ridge of rock outcrop, 15m × 2m to 3m and up to 1m high above ground level. On this are inscribed a number of motifs. Some are quite distinct but others are not easily visible. Fifteen examples were noted on this occasion but as much of the rock is covered by a layer of grass it is probable that there are several others. Only cup-and-circle motifs (up to 5 concentric circles) were noted and none of the more complex designs described by Kinahan (1888, 427-37) were seen. The site is located in good pasture on a steep slope overlooking Mulroy Bay to the E. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
