Gryet, located 4 km west of Nexø near Bodilsker, is home to one of Denmark's largest collections of megaliths. Of the original approximately 100 menhirs, 67 have been preserved standing among the trees. The grave field was in use from roughly 350 to 900 AD, with the Iron Age people erecting the uninscribed standing stones as memorials over graves containing cremated remains. The site was saved from destruction by governor Emil Vedel in 1870, who noticed stones being broken up and removed.
