Bækkegård is one of Bornholm's most important Iron Age and Viking Age cemeteries, located on a ridge near Østerlars. Governor Emil Vedel excavated 156 graves here in just 13 days in 1876, with additional graves found later, making it the site of nearly half of all Iron and Viking Age graves found on Bornholm. The people buried here favoured inhumation over cremation, preserving artefacts including one of the largest collections of necklace beads from a single Viking Age site in Scandinavia.
