The sandstone quarries outside Nexø have been active since 1754, when King Frederik V established Frederiks Stenbrud to supply a substitute for expensive imported marble for Copenhagen's new palaces. The quarry provided reddish Nexø sandstone for major buildings including Frederiks Hospital, Copenhagen University, the National Museum, and the Freedom Monument. The old quarry closed in 1957 and is now a water-filled recreational area, while the Bodilsker quarry 4 km west continues to produce the distinctive sandstone.
