Two successive royal fortresses in the Almindingen forest representing multiple construction phases. Gamleborg, built c. 750 AD, was Bornholm's first fortress and seat of the island's kings during the Viking Age. The massive site is 264 metres long and 110 metres wide. Around 1150 it was abandoned in favour of Lilleborg, 700 metres to the northeast, which served as the royal castle until it was burned during Prince Jaromar of Rügen's attack in 1259. Both ruins survive as important archaeological sites.
