Sorte Muld is one of Scandinavia's most important archaeological sites, covering over 1 square km near Svaneke in Ibsker parish with cultural layers up to 1.5 metres deep. Active from roughly 200 to 800 AD, it served as a major centre of trade, military power, and religion. Over 3,000 tiny gold-foil figures (guldgubber) from the 6th-7th centuries have been found here, along with semi-precious stones from India, Roman glass, and ritually deposited weapons, indicating connections across the ancient world.
