Vestergade is one of Silkeborg's first streets, laid out by the state and paved as early as 1850, planned as a traffic hub for the main highways between Aarhus-Ringkøbing and Horsens-Viborg. Behind the street frontages, Silkeborg's first industrial development took place in the courtyards toward Søgade, with machine factories, textile companies, and other manufacturing. The section from numbers 42-72 preserves the historic character of this key commercial and industrial street, which became a pedestrian zone in 1973.
