Hærvejen (the Army Road) is an ancient north-south route stretching thousands of years back through Jutland, following the Jutland ridge where it was easiest to travel dry-shod. In Silkeborg Kommune, the northern section passes through scenic areas from Neder Hvam via Thorning southward. The route was used in the Middle Ages as a pilgrimage route and for cattle transport to Germany, and was rediscovered by historian Hugo Matthiesen in the 1930s.
