Tvillum

Tvillum is the site of a former Augustinian monastery founded around 1246-49 by Bishop Gunner of Ribe, who donated his ancestral property to establish a monastic community at Gudenåen. The monastery church, built in brick, is the only surviving building. The four-winged monastery complex was demolished after the Reformation in 1536 when its lands were taken over by the crown and placed under Silkeborg Slot. Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of the sacristy and monastery wings.
