This kulturmiljø encompasses the area around Gentofte Sø and the old village core, from which the municipality takes its name. The place name Gentofte was first recorded in 1164 as "Giafnetofth", where the first element derives from an old name for the lake meaning "the giving". The area retains traces of the transition from agricultural village to affluent Copenhagen suburb during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
