Med etableringen af det danske jernbanenet blev Randers centrum for produktionen af togvogne. Den første fabrik startede i 1861 og blev fra 1876 til selskabet Scandia. I 1896 flyttede industrien til det store nuværende areal ved havnen, hvor der blev produceret tog frem til 2014.
