Malling Kirkegård is Denmark's only known fortified churchyard, with remains of a round defense tower built from fieldstone in the Middle Ages. The oldest fortification was possibly established in the 1100s as defense against Wendish pirate raids, and in the first half of the 1300s, the wall was expanded to approximately 3 meters high and 2.5 meters wide with a round corner tower (11 meters in diameter) added at the southeast corner. Today, a restored ruin of the defense tower and thick churchyard walls testify to this remarkable early defensive function.
