Norsminde is a small fishing village at the mouth of Norsminde Fjord, 20 km south of Aarhus, where ships have docked since the 1200s. The trading place was built in 1854 by Aarhus merchant Hans Broge, who used the harbor to import timber and transport livestock and general cargo. The loading pier's golden age ended abruptly when the Aarhus-Odder-Hou railway opened in 1884, diverting trade to inland stations and causing the closure of the ladeplads and its associated inn.
