This kulturmiljø marks the site of a Viking Age magnate residence and regional power centre on the western shore of Tissø, where large-scale archaeological excavations have been conducted since 1995. The site, active from roughly 550 to 1050 CE, yielded more than 15,000 artefacts and traces of great hall residences, cult houses, and workshops testifying to both national and international connections. Tissø is believed to be named after the Norse war god Tyr, and a cult house for worship of the old gods was discovered at the site.
