Øresø is one of Denmark's oldest enterprises, with roots possibly dating to 1244 and certainly to 1356 under King Valdemar Atterdag. Until around 1895 it milled grain using waterpower from Halleby Å, then shifted exclusively to wood processing. After a fire in 1910, the sawmill was rebuilt near Svebølle Station and at its peak in 1971 accounted for 60 percent of Denmark's total laminated timber production, employing 160 people before production ceased in 2003.
