„Interessentskabet Bøtø Nors udtørring“ blev, med Edward Tesdorpf som den væsentligste drivkraft, stiftet i 1860. Samme år påbegyndtes gravningen af Marrebæk Kanal og bygningen af en sluse ved Guldborgsund. Dette arbejde afsluttedes året efter.
